报告题目： Biomimetic Application of Fish Fins

Fins of Bony fish feature a composite structure including a soft membrane reinforced by embedded rays. The anisotropic flexibility imparted by the distribution of the rays is found to play a pivotal role in the high performance of the fin in thrust generation. The advantages of this design, e.g. structural lightness, deployability, and controllability suggest biomimetic applications in highly efficient and highly maneuverable underwater vehicles. In this study we will numerically study the structure vs. performance of this biological structure, and identify the primary characteristics that should be imitated in biomimetics. Similar structures in natural will also be discussed.
Dr. Qiang Zhu is Associate Professor in the Department of Structural Engineeringat the University of California San Diego. He received a PhD degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000. His research interests include offshore structures, fluid-structure interaction, and biomechanics. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREERAward.
